Mom's First Sewing Class - BASIC SEWING 101

6 weeks $390 (+materials)
Thursdays 10:30am - 1:00pm



GOAL OF THIS CLASS is to teach basic sewing via the construction of a child's costume. The students will learn about fabrics, hand sewing techniques, patterns, machine sewing and design. Each student should emerge with their own unique and creative costumes, an understanding of basic sewing and an introduction to the garment district.


WEEK 1: Learning the sewing machine, laying out a pattern sew a tote bag

WEEK 2: Darts, setting in a sleeve, sew a basic balanced bodice, Taking measurements, Meet about children's costumes

WEEK 3: Sewing a zipper, Hemming a garment, go to the garment district to pick out fabrics

WEEK 4: Studio day to work on costumes, Learn embellishment (sequins, beading, embroidery, pompoms)

WEEK 5: Studio day to work on costumes, Learn finishings (blind stitch, bias tape, facings)

WEEK 6: Finish costumes, Hand embellish costumes


Instructor's Bio:
Brad Callahan graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a degree in Fashion Design and Illustration. His work focuses on the absurd and often mocks fashion through the complete embrace of "bad taste is good taste". Brad is currently designing two labels BCALLA and OUR, also works with the musician Colin Self in creating one of a kind identity pieces. He has shown in New York, San Francosco, Chicago, and Brusseles.
