SAORI: Mindfulness Weaving for Everyone
Loop of the Loom - Thursday
227 East 87th Street (between 2nd & 3rd Avenues)

Yukako Satone, Founder, Loop of the Loom
Ria Hawks, RN
with Jennifer Murphy, ATR-BC, LMHC
It's easy to express yourself through color, texture, and rhythm with SAORI weaving arts — a form of mindfulness meditation weaving from Japan. Dedicated to free expression and self-development, Loop of the Loom is bringing this method (suitable for people of all ages) to New York City; their free-form "happy weaving" approach employs brightly-hued natural fibers and threads. Their goal is not solely to teach a craft, but to encourage self-exploration and facilitate personal growth. In this daylong Master Class, participants will learn about the origins of SAORI, and how it is currently being used by people of all ages and abilities. SAORI origami clothing will also be featured, as well as how this form of "holistic healing weaving" is being used in hospitals and homeless shelters. Participants will be given ample opportunity to spend time at the looms.  Join us to celebrate the beauty of imperfection, an aesthetic that is eminently compatible with the creative arts in therapy!

Sunday, 11/09

SAORI: A Zen Approach to Hand Weaving
Executive Conference Center - Sunday
1601 Broadway (enter on 48th Street)

Ria Hawks, RN
Genevieve M. Lowry, MEd, CCLS

SAORI is the zen art of weaving by hand that is dedicated to free expression and self-development regardless of physical or mental ability, age, sex or artistic aptitude. A SAORI weaving program has been developed at the Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant Clinic at the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York Presbyterian because illness—whether physical or psychological—can activate feelings of fear, isolation, and helplessness, not only for the affected child, but also for their siblings and parents. In this 50-minute Lunch & Learn session, we’ll illustrate the healing properties of SAORI weaving through presentation, discussion, and demonstration.
